About 40 Foot Insulated Shipping Containers

A 40 foot insulated container is built on the same Corten steel shell as a standard 40′ shipping container, with an added insulated lining that slows heat transfer between the inside and outside. This keeps the interior temperature far more stable than an uninsulated steel box, which makes it a practical choice for storing items that react badly to temperature swings.

Each unit measures 40 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet 6 inches tall on the outside, with a usable interior of roughly 2,350 cubic feet. The insulated lining is sealed to limit condensation and help maintain consistent conditions inside.

These containers work for both short-term and long-term storage. They can be left as a passive insulated unit or upgraded with refrigeration and power for active climate control. Sales are available nationwide and rentals are available in California.

Key Features

  • Sealed insulated lining: slows heat transfer to hold a steady interior temperature for sensitive contents.
  • Corten (weathering) steel shell: high-strength corrugated steel body built for long-term, heavy-duty use.
  • 8-gauge steel frame:  reinforced framework that carries structural load and supports stacking.
  • 14-gauge steel body panels: durable corrugated walls and roof.
  • One-inch marine-grade plywood floor: rated for heavy loads, forklift traffic, and pallet storage.
  • Secure lockbox system:  steel lockbox shrouds the padlock to resist tampering.
  • Built-in ventilation: vents promote air circulation and help control moisture buildup.
  • Optional refrigeration: can be configured as a powered cold-storage or refrigerated unit.
  • Flexible power options:  electrical, lighting, and HVAC can be added.
  • Customizable: doors, shelving, partitions, and other modifications available to fit the use case.
  • Buy or rent: purchase nationwide; rent within California.

FAQ's

What's the difference between an insulated container and a refrigerated container?

An insulated container is a passive unit — the lining slows temperature change but doesn’t actively cool anything, so the inside stays closer to a steady temperature on its own. A refrigerated container adds a powered cooling system on top of that insulation to actively hold a set temperature. Many people start with an insulated unit and add refrigeration later if their needs change.

The walls and roof are lined with a sealed insulating layer bonded to the interior of the steel shell. It’s installed to limit heat transfer and reduce condensation. If you have a specific R-value or material in mind for your application, let us know and we’ll match the build to it.

It does take a little. Because the lining sits inside the steel shell, the usable interior of a 40 ft insulated unit is about 39’6″ long, 7’8.5″ wide, and 7’10” tall — slightly tighter than an uninsulated container of the same outside size. For most storage layouts the difference is minor, but it’s worth accounting for if you’re loading oversized items.

Yes, to a point. The insulation alone keeps the interior more stable than bare steel, which is enough for a lot of general storage. If you need to hold a specific temperature reliably, you’ll want to add a refrigeration or HVAC unit, which we can fit during customization.

A 40 ft insulated container gives you roughly 2,350 cubic feet (about 66.6 m³) of usable space and can carry a payload of around 58,330 lbs. That’s enough room for a substantial amount of palletized inventory, equipment, or bulk materials.

Yes. These units accept flexible power options, so electrical wiring, interior lighting, and HVAC or refrigeration can be installed. Tell us how you plan to use the container and we’ll spec the power setup to match.

Absolutely. Beyond the standard cargo doors, we can add roll-up doors, personnel doors, windows, interior shelving, and partition walls. Customization is one of the most common requests, so the unit can be built around your workflow rather than the other way around.

It comes down to how long you need it. Renting makes sense for short-term or seasonal needs, while buying is usually the better value for ongoing or permanent use. Sales are available nationwide and rentals are available within California. We can walk you through the math for your situation.

Both. We carry new and used 40 ft insulated containers, and the right choice usually depends on your budget and how much cosmetic wear you’re comfortable with. Used units cost less and are structurally sound; new units offer the cleanest condition. Pricing varies by condition, so call for a current quote.

Security is built in. Each container has a steel lockbox that shrouds the padlock to make it far harder to cut or tamper with, plus the heavy corrugated steel shell itself is a strong deterrent. For higher-security needs, we can add additional locking hardware during customization.
